Hi, my employer has already purchased group disability insurance in California. Do I still need to consider purchasing individual life insurance? Does working in an electrical company considered hazardous?

The job is considered dangerous according to the fatality rate or the ratio between deaths and the total number of people employed in that profession. Based on the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, in the year 2007, few of the most hazardous jobs were related fisher workers, farmers and ranchers, roofers, electrical power-line installer and repairer, police and patrol officers, and drivers. If you work for an electrical company, your occupation may be considered as risky because of the possible danger it may entail. To make
sure, you can check with your insurance agent if your occupation is considered risky.

If your employer has already covered your group with a disability insurance or what they also called Accidental Death& Dismemberment Coverage, you may still want to consider purchasing an individual disability insurance policy because of the more benefits that you’ll be getting. If you leave the job, note that you cannot take the group disability insurance policy with you and cannot convert it to an individual policy. Without an individual policy, you might be left without coverage when you need it the most. Security programs from the government and other compensation for protection because the benefits to be paid are limited to certain restrictive terms.
